Architect Hayley Pryor has crafted a unique, compact mobile cabin named The Oculus, inspired by the quintessential Australian shed. This innovative design is not just a tiny home; it's a moveable, road-legal dwelling that can be easily relocated. Pryor, in collaboration with local builder Chris King, has created a 21-square-meter sanctuary that seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics. The cabin's exterior is crafted from timber, paying homage to the traditional Australian shed, while its finely corrugated metal roof adds a touch of modern elegance. The centerpiece of The Oculus is a large central skylight, aptly named 'The Oculus,' which not only floods the interior with natural light but also serves as a stack ventilation system when opened. Pryor explains, 'Drawing on the familiarity of the Australian shed and reinterpreting it through form, light, and ventilation, the design results in a flexible retreat for minimal living.' The cabin's interior is a testament to efficient space utilization. Built-in furniture, including a daybed, benches, and counters, demarcates the sleeping, living, dining, and kitchen areas, providing ample storage solutions. A sliding door leads to a compact bathroom, which also includes an accessible storage area. Large plywood shutters enhance natural ventilation, and a large sliding glass door at the front opens the living space onto a terrace, sheltered by the metal eaves of the roof. Pryor highlights the materials' role in creating a cohesive and unified interior, stating, 'Locally sourced hardwood timbers and corrugated sheeting provide durability and familiarity, while refined plywood interiors fold from the walls into joinery, creating a cohesive, unified interior.' The Oculus is the first made-to-order model from King's mobile home company, Retreat House, and it showcases a blend of practicality and design. It joins a growing collection of mobile cabins featured on Dezeen, such as the Cocoon Freelancer by Maruán Attia, designed for flatbed truck transport, and a hemp-clad micro home created by a social enterprise to offer an affordable housing solution.
